Conservation Treatments

Cotton swabs and solvent gels set out for controlled surface cleaning tests on a small oil study

Surface Cleaning Tests

Indicative from £45

Small, mapped tests to understand soiling and varnish behaviour. We document safe options and outline what a full clean would involve before any wider work proceeds.

Flat-lit panel during partial varnish reduction with edge masking and test windows

Varnish Reduction & Revarnish

Indicative from £120

Gradual reduction where appropriate, aiming to improve legibility while keeping age and surface character. A final protective layer is chosen for the painting’s needs.

Canvas tear aligned with thread-by-thread joins under magnification

Structural Mends & Infill

Indicative from £95

Tear alignment, edge support, fills and texture matching. Losses are evened for retouch so the surface reads calmly at normal viewing distance.

Gilded frame corner with bole exposed, ready for leaf repairs and toning

Frame Care & Toning

Indicative from £65

Consolidation, gesso and bole repairs, leaf work and toning to settle scuffs. We check fit, fixings and backing so the work hangs securely after treatment.

Restoration Questions

Do you take every painting for treatment?

We begin with condition notes and small tests. If a treatment is sensible for the work, we outline a plan, timescale and likely outcomes before anything proceeds.

Can colour shifts be reversed completely?

Some changes come from age and materials. We focus on improving legibility and surface calm while respecting the painting’s character and maker’s intent.

What do you need from me?

A few clear photos in good light, approximate size, frame details, and any known history. This helps us prepare a measured first look and estimate.

Do you work on frames as well?

Yes—loose joins, gesso losses, leaf repairs and toning are handled in-house. We also check fixings, backing and glazing to support the painting after treatment.
